چکیده

Packet-based optical access ring is becoming a promising solution in metropolitan networks. Its performance depends mainly on how optical resource sharing takes place among the different competing access nodes. In such a network fairness issues are likely to arise between upstream and downstream nodes competing to access a common data channel. We analyze the system performance in terms of access delay required by each node to inject a packet on the shared medium. We observe that sharing the available bandwidth fairly and arbitrarily between nodes does not resolve the fairness problem. Consequently, an additional flow control mechanism has to be considered, not only to limit the transmission of the upstream nodes but also to organize their emission process. This paper provides a new protocol called TCARD (Traffic Control Architecture using Remote Descriptors), based on a preventive reservation scheme, to alleviate the fairness problems. The reservation process consists in forcing the upstream nodes to ensure enough available bandwidth for downstream nodes’ transmission purpose. Moreover, we develop analytical model in order to assess the access delay when TCARD is enabled. The analytical and simulation results show how the proposed solution alleviates the performance degradation and the resource sub-utilization while achieving fairness among bus nodes. Keywords—Bus-based optical access network, Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocol, Fairness control, Access delay evaluation.

A posteriori versus a priori access strategies in slotted all-optical WDM rings

The paper presents the concept of ``a posteriori'' access strategy, as opposed to the previously studied concept of ``a priori'' strategy, to provide a fair and ecient access technique in slotted wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) rings under a large variety of trac patterns. Using a posteriori strategies, the source node selects the packet for transmission based on the state of the WDM c...

An Almost Optimal MAC Protocol for All-Optical WDM Multi-Rings with Tunable Transmitters and Fixed Receivers

This paper considers SRR, an almost optimal collision-free access scheme for all-optical packet networks based on WDM multi-channel ring topologies providing slotted channels for transmissions to disjoint subsets of destination nodes. Only a channel inspection capability and local status information are required at nodes in order to implement the access protocol. Since SRR is not able to enforc...

Design and Performance Evaluation of Scheduling Algorithms for Unslotted CSMA/CA with Backoff MAC Protocols in Multiple-Access WDM Ring Networks

The unslotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) with backoff is a fully distributed, asynchronous Media Access Control (MAC) protocol for multiple-access Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) ring networks with simplicity and robustness comparable to those of Ethernet [1], [2]. In this paper we present the results of performance evaluation of four scheduling algo...

Multi-MetaRing fairness control in a WDM folded-bus architecture

The paper deals with fairness issues in a slotted, single-hop, WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical architecture, based on a folded bus topology, previously proposed as a broadband access system or as a metro network. The peculiar fairness problem arising in this folded bus based architecture is addressed and an extension of the MetaRing protocol to the WDM scenario, named Multi-MetaR...
